Surgery for eye tumours

Surgery for eye tumours calls for great precision and close interdisciplinary teamwork. At the Department of Ophthalmology at Inselspital Bern, we offer the full range of ocular tumour surgery.
Before proton therapy at the Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI), we mark the tumour with small tantalum clips. These are sutured onto the sclera, the white outer wall of the eye. The markers allow the radiation treatment to be planned and delivered with millimetre precision. This means the tumour can be targeted accurately while the surrounding tissue is spared as much as possible.
To confirm the diagnosis, we perform all types of biopsy. These include vitreous biopsies, for example when lymphoma or unexplained inflammation is suspected, as well as retinal and choroidal biopsies. The samples undergo histological and molecular genetic analysis. The results help us choose the best treatment and assess the prognosis.
